As a frequent YouTube user, I come across nearly a hundred videos
a week from users all over the web. Sometimes I even add to the ever
growing pile of cyber-shit with my own videos that you can find at:
www.youtube.com/user/murphologist
So I decided to put myself up to the challenge to figure out my ten favorite
videos that I've found on that mind numbing, yet admittedly entertaining site...
10) Billy Mays - The Auto-tune Infomercial Ballad (ft. the Scatman)
The summer of 2009 was the summer of death. It dealt unexpected
blows like the bizarre asphixiation of David Carradine, the overblown
departure of Michael Jackson, the sad passing of Patrick Swayze, the
disappointing demise of John Hughes and let's not forget the parting
of television's favorite pitchman, Billy Mays. Oxy Clean revolutionized
household cleaning products, but it was the beard and the voice that
kept us interested. Equal parts hilarious and touching, this tribute
puts the auto tune vocals of T-Pain to shame.
9) Tarantino Slaps A Cameraman
As anyone who knows me can attest to, I am a HUGE Quentin Tarantino
fan. I study his work and I watch his interviews and I examine his process
at an exhaustive rate. But however much I know about his work, I still
don't know much about Tarantino: the man. This video, taken at the 2008
Sundance film fest gives a little insight about who QT is as a person and it
is obvious, he's got a little bit of a temper...
8) Battle of The Batmans
I love this! It's the greatest movie mashup video I've ever seen. Clips
taken from every Batman film from 1989 to 2005 are pieced together
expertly for comedic and dramatic effect. And as an editor, this vid is
certainly a sight to behold.
7) Vader Sessions
Everyone knows that it's James Earl Jones's distinctive voice that
creates the true (phantom) menace of the Darth Vader character.
However, James Earl's filmography isn't limited to just the Star Wars
films. So someone had the bright idea to take dialogue from some of
Jones's other work and dub it over Vader's lines. The result is
something more powerful than you can possibly imagine...
6) TOP 100 FILMS
As a movie madman, I am obsessed with creating a perfect list
of my 100 favorite films. Some YouTube users post videos with
stills from their favorite films, some even manage to rip scenes from
the movies into their videos. However, it's this vid right here from
YouTube user Barringer82 that is the perfect summation of what a
TOP 100 list could be. And what works best about it is that none of
the movies are identified, so the viewer can make a little game as to
what movie every quick random clip came from. I'll admit, I was
stumped on a couple of them, but eventually I figured it out.
5) That's How Sinatra Rolls, Kid!
Eddie Deirmenjian's consistantly quotable short film about a Scotch
loving lounge lizard is a work of comedy gold. I could watch this flick on
a loop for hours and still not get tired of it. Now watch this before I
punch you in the fucking uterus!
4) WKUK-Grapist
This skit from The Whitest Kids U'Know never gets old for me and
remains further evdience that this is the WKUK is best comedy troupe
to come out of the woodwork since The Kids in the Hall. This scene is a
perfect satire of fruit soda, commercialism... and rape.
3) Sunday Afternoon
It was hard just to choose one vid from Jon Lajoie to put on this list
because his whole collection of uploads from 'Everyday Normal Guy' to
'Show Me Your Genitals' are works of comedy genius. But it's 'Sunday
Afternoon' that is my personal favorite. It's the most catchy and true
to life of all his work thus far. Just listen...
2) Sony Releases Stupid Piece Of Shit That Doesn't Fucking Work
The Onion has continued to be a useful editorial for articles that
poked fun at the news and always did it with a straight face. Now
with the evolution of the internet, The Onion can now do online
video reports in much the same way. And no other story in their
wide range of material can truly measure up to the brutal and
truthful hilarity of what you're about to see...
1) Nicolas Cage - Sankyo Pachinko ad
Over the years, Nicolas Cage has been going overseas to promote
a Japanese gaming practice known as Pachinko. There's at least 5
of these Pachinko commericals floating around online, each one is
incredibly strange in it's own way. In one, Cage is playing a cowboy
who dances with aliens, in another he's being enchanted by beautiful
identical triplets. I personally prefer the simpler Pachinko commercials
like the one where he plays the piano and sings for us-- or this one here
where he just talks about his day in Japan and ends his speech with the
most condescending apology I have ever heard in my life. I can't
honestly say why I've chosen this as my number 1 YouTube video, but
it just felt right to me... Pachinko!
I hope you enjoyed this list. Look forward to more in the future!
